Christina Lor of ErgonomixPR told me about BarCampCHS about a month ago. BarCamps are “unconferences” where anyone can submit a proposal to present on any subject and attendees vote for the topics in which they’re most interested. Another great aspect of BarCamp? Thanks to sponsors and volunteers, it’s free.

I submitted a proposal with Christina on how to use social media to build stronger communities. Asheville has an incredibly involved community; businesses and citizens alike, contribute, interact and engage on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and many other social networks. Twitter, however, has emerged as one of our most useful outlets for community related information.

We don’t hide behind our computers here, we use them to find each other and meet new people. One of my favorite uses for Twitter is the #avltweetup. Jose Ibarra and Tom Constant of Applied Solutions Group, created a site for our tweetups, http://avltweetup.com. Anytime the hashtag #avltweetup is posted, you’ll see it there.

Jose and Tom have created a page just for BarCampCHS, http://avltweetup.com/barcamp/. Traffic jam on the bridge? Great meal at a local restaurant? Question about Charleston? Tweet with any of these hashtags: #barcampchs, #chs, #chsconnect and join the conversation.

Now You See Them Holy Ghost Tent Revivals

Last Thursday at the Emerald Lounge, two bands, one from Asheville & the other from Greensboro, put on one of the best shows I’ve seen all year. Now You See Them and Holy Ghost Tent Revival played together at the end of each set, and though I love them both separately, I certainly hope they plan on making an album together because it was magic. I think I need some lemonade now.

Among the countless varieties of basil, sage and rosemary at this weekend’s Herb Festival in Asheville, this one really stuck out. I wonder if it works for door-to-door sales calls? The other plants do seem to be upset...
